The Useful God, and Why Practitioners Disagree
Every BaZi reading converges on the same question, whether it says so or not: which element does this chart need most? That element is called the useful god — 用神 — and once it is fixed, it decides which luck pillars are helpful, which years are hard, which directions and seasons are favoured. Change the answer and the whole reading turns.
It is also the place where BaZi's schools disagree most openly, and where a great deal of confident writing papers over the disagreement. This article sets out four standard methods, runs all four on one real chart, and shows what happens.
What a useful god is supposed to do
The idea is straightforward. A chart is a set of relationships between five elements. In most charts something is out of balance — an element over-supplied, another absent, the day master with too much or too little support behind it. The useful god is the element whose presence would correct that imbalance, and the harmful god is the one that would deepen it.
The difficulty is not the concept. It is the diagnosis.
Four methods that do not agree
| Method | The question it asks |
|---|---|
| Balance 扶抑 | Which element evens out the chart's support behind the day master? |
| Seasonal adjustment 调候 | What does the season of birth lack — is the chart cold, hot, dry or damp? |
| Mediation 通关 | Which two forces are in conflict, and what element joins them? |
| Pathology 病药 | What is this chart's specific fault, and what cures it? |
Each method is a coherent way of reasoning, each has centuries of practice behind it, and they routinely nominate different elements. The reason is that they are answering subtly different questions: balance asks about the day master's support, seasonal adjustment asks about temperature, mediation asks about conflict, pathology asks about fault. In a chart where all four point the same way, everyone agrees. In a chart where they do not, the choice of method is doing the work — and the method is almost never stated.
The same chart, four answers
Take the chart this site uses as its worked example: 4 February 1990, 10:00, Taipei — 己巳 丁丑 庚子 辛巳. The day master is 庚 (Yang Metal), and the element tally is:
| Element | Count | |
|---|---|---|
| Wood 木 | 0 | absent |
| Fire 火 | 3 | 丁 on the month stem, 丙 hidden in both 巳 branches |
| Earth 土 | 2 | 己 on the year stem, 丑 as the month branch |
| Metal 金 | 2 | 庚 as the day master, 辛 on the hour stem |
| Water 水 | 1 | 癸 hidden in the day branch 子 |
Support for the day master is 4 against 4 — dead even, as set out in the strength article. That evenness is what makes this chart a good test case. Now run the four methods:
| Method | What it finds in this chart | Element nominated |
|---|---|---|
| Balance | Support is even, so the reading turns on whether the month branch counts as backing. Read with the season, 己 earth generating metal makes the day master marginally strong, and strong metal wants restraint — fire to control it, wood to give it work. | Fire (or wood) |
| Seasonal adjustment | A late-winter chart with no wood in it is cold and dry. What it wants is warmth — fire. | Fire |
| Mediation | Fire is plentiful and metal is the day master. The element that joins fire to metal is earth — which the chart already supplies twice, on the year stem and in the month branch. | Earth — already present |
| Pathology | The clearest absence is wood, which for a metal day master is the wealth element. There is no wood anywhere, hidden stems included. Treat that as the fault and the cure is wood — which the chart cannot supply at all. | Wood — unavailable |
Three different nominations, from the same eight characters. Fire by two different routes (and for two different reasons — one about balance, one about temperature). Earth, on the grounds that the joining element is what an already-balanced chart needs. Wood, on the grounds that the missing element is the whole problem.
And notice how the third and fourth answers behave. Mediation nominates an element the chart already has twice, so the "remedy" is already in place — a strange thing for a remedy to be. Pathology nominates an element the chart does not contain at all, so the cure can only arrive through a luck pillar or an annual pillar. Both are internally consistent. They cannot both be the answer.
Why the disagreement is not a bug
It helps to be precise about what is being disputed. The facts of the chart are not in contention: everyone agrees the tally is 0 / 3 / 2 / 2 / 1, everyone agrees 丑 is the month branch, everyone agrees support is 4 against 4. The disagreement is entirely in the weighting — how much the season is worth, whether an even chart should be read as leaning strong or leaning weak, whether an absence is a fault or merely a fact.
Those are judgements, not measurements. A chart is a model, and a model has parameters. What the tradition never settled is the parameter values, which is precisely why the fourth method above and the second can both be called classical.
This has a practical consequence. When two readers give you opposite useful gods, they are not necessarily wrong. They are almost certainly running different methods, and if neither tells you which, you cannot tell whether the disagreement is about your chart or about their textbook.
What we do about it
We do not nominate a useful god, and the engine does not compute one. That is a deliberate constraint, not an omission, and the methodology page states it in the list of things the engine does not do: it does not arbitrate between schools; where traditions disagree, we declare which rule we follow.
So the policy is:
- We compute what is uncontested. The eight characters, the element tally, the support/drain count, the ten gods, the hidden stems, the luck pillars. All of it reproducible, all of it checkable.
- We print the count, not a verdict. A 4 / 4 support split is shown as 4 / 4, because rounding it to "balanced-and-therefore-strong" would be us choosing a method on your behalf.
- We say where the schools split. Late 子 hour, luck-pillar direction, the boundary rule — every convention is listed on the methodology page with the field name the engine uses.
- We do not invent a preference. No "your lucky colour is red", no "face east". Those follow from a useful god, and if the useful god is a contested choice, the recommendation is a contested choice wearing a costume.
The honest position is not that the useful god does not matter. It is that the useful god is a conclusion, and you are entitled to see the method that produced it. Anyone who hands you one without the method has handed you their judgement and called it your chart.
Common questions
What is a useful god in one sentence?
The element a chart most needs in order to be balanced and workable, from which follow the elements, seasons and directions said to help it.
If the schools disagree, is the whole system unreliable?
The calculations are not in dispute and never were — the pillars, the tally, the ten gods, the luck pillars. What is disputed is the interpretation layer on top, where the weighting choices live. Our position is that being clear about which layer is which is more useful than pretending the whole thing is a single measurement.
Does my useful god change over time?
The useful god describes the natal chart. Luck pillars and annual pillars step new characters into the chart every decade and every year, and those characters carry their own elements and ten gods — so what a given year supplies relative to your chart does change. That is the subject of the luck pillars guide.
Do you calculate one for me?
No, and we say so on the methodology page rather than quietly leaving it out. What we give you instead is the raw material: the eight characters, the element tally, the support split and the ten gods, all reproducible, so that whatever method you follow can be applied to them — and so that any reading someone gives you can be checked against the same numbers.
