Chinese zodiac compatibility

Pick two zodiac signs and this page shows you what the classical tables actually say about them: a six-combination, a six-clash, a six-harm, a punishment — or nothing. There are 78 pairings of the twelve signs, and 53 of them carry no classical relation at all. That number is the most useful thing on this page, because it tells you how much of the popular “zodiac compatibility chart” is interpretation layered over a very short list of rules.

The short version

The twelve animals are the twelve earthly branches, so two signs can only relate in five named ways: 六合 six-combination, 六冲 six-clash, 六害 six-harm, 相刑 punishment, and 自刑 self-punishment. Across all 78 pairings that is 6, 6, 6, 7 and 4 hits respectively — and no relation whatsoever for the remaining 53.

A compatibility score of “4 out of 5 stars” is a translation of one of those five relations into a number. We show the relation and let you judge — we do not manufacture a fifth star.

How it’s calculated

  1. 1

Map the animals onto the branches

Rat 鼠 is 子, Ox 丑 is 牛, and so on through the twelve. The animals are a nickname for the branches, which is why every compatibility statement about the zodiac is ultimately a statement about one branch against another — a table that has been fixed for centuries and has nothing to do with either animal.

  2. 2

Look up the pair in the fixed tables

The engine holds five tables: six combinations (六合), six clashes (六冲), six harms (六害), the punishment pairs (相刑), and the four branches that punish themselves (自刑). A pair is checked against all five, because more than one can apply — Goat and Ox are simultaneously a clash and a punishment, and the result says both.

  3. 3

Report the relation, not a score

The output is the relation, its name in both languages, and what the classical reading makes of it. Where two signs belong to the same three-harmony group (三合) but do not form a relation on their own, the result says that too — because a trine needs three branches, and two of them is not a trine.

The full rule set — every convention, in order, with the engine field names — is published on the methodology page.

Where the star ratings actually come from

Most zodiac compatibility pages rank all 144 combinations on a scale of one to five hearts. That ranking is not a separate body of knowledge: it is the five relations above, translated into numbers and then padded out. The pad is the problem. Once you decide that every pair needs a score, the 53 pairs with no relation have to be given one anyway — and that is where the ratings stop being derived from anything.

We would rather show you the short list. Six signs combine with yours, six clash, six harm, and a handful punish — that is the entire vocabulary of the classical system at this level. Everything else is careful reading of a specific chart.

This also explains why different compatibility pages disagree with each other about the same pair. They are not working from different tables; they are filling the same gaps in different ways.

Same sign is not automatically the best match

Popular content often calls a same-sign pairing ideal — “two Dragons understand each other.” The classical tables say something more specific. Four of the twelve branches punish themselves when they repeat: 辰 Dragon, 午 Horse, 酉 Rooster and 亥 Pig. Meeting your own sign on those four is classed as 自刑, a self-punishment, and it is read as the same trait doubling on itself rather than a partner arriving.

For the other eight branches, a same-sign pairing carries no classical relation at all — which is neutral, not favourable. Try Dragon with Dragon, then Rat with Rat, on the tool above: one gives a named relation, the other gives none, and a star-rating chart would flatten both into the same row.

A trine takes three signs, not two

You will read that the Rat, the Dragon and the Monkey are “the most compatible group”, and that is true as far as it goes — 申子辰 form the Water trine, one of the four classical three-harmony groups. The catch is that a trine is defined by all three branches being present. Any two of them on their own are not a trine; the pair simply shares membership in one.

This matters because it changes the advice. If the two of you are Rat and Monkey, you do not have a strong two-sign match — you have a pair with no direct relation and a third sign that would complete the group. The tool states that distinction explicitly rather than reporting “good match” and leaving it there.

The four groups are 申子辰 (Water), 亥卯未 (Wood), 寅午戌 (Fire) and 巳酉丑 (Metal). The reference table below marks every pairing that shares a group.

A zodiac sign is one character out of eight

Your zodiac animal is your birth year’s branch — the year pillar. A full BaZi chart has four pillars: year, month, day and hour, and the day pillar is the one that anchors every reading. Comparing two people by animal signs compares one character against one character and ignores the other fourteen.

Real compatibility analysis in this system looks across the whole chart: sixteen stem pairs and sixteen branch pairs between two people, cross-referenced, plus the day masters and the five-element balance on either side. That is what our compatibility calculator does, with the same engine as the main chart.

So treat this page as what it is — a fast answer to “what do our signs actually say?”, and a place to see the tables honestly. If the answer changes your mind about a relationship, that is a good moment to look at the full charts rather than a stronger version of the same shortcut.

Which year, exactly? The boundary question

There is a second reason to be careful with signs. The popular zodiac changes year at 春节, the lunar new year. The BaZi year pillar — which is what the branch tables are actually about — changes at 立春, roughly two weeks earlier. If you were born in the gap between those two dates, the sign on a wall calendar and the branch used by this system disagree.

We resolve it the BaZi way: the year branch used here follows 立春 to the exact minute. For a sign-pairing question the practical effect is small, but it is not zero — it can move one person by one whole animal.

If your birthday falls in that window, check your year pillar on the main calculator rather than trusting a calendar, and see the stems-and-branches page for how the two calendars diverge.

How to use the result

Use it as an observation, not a verdict. A six-clash pairing means two directions of energy that pull apart; whether that is a difficulty or a source of tension worth having depends entirely on the two people. Every named relation here is structural — it describes how two positions sit relative to each other, not what will happen.

What the relation is genuinely good for is naming something. If you have noticed a repeating pattern in a relationship, knowing which structural relation is present at least gives the pattern a name, and names are easier to work with than vague incompatibility.

What we will not do is put a number on it. There is no star rating on this page, no percentage, and no “best match” badge, because there is nothing in the tables that would justify one.

A worked example

Three pairings, chosen because they cover the three cases people ask about most: a named “good” relation, a same-sign pairing that is not what the popular charts claim, and a pairing with no relation at all. All three come from the same fixed tables the tool uses.

Why these three

One pairing with a relation, one same-sign pairing the popular charts get wrong, and one with no relation at all. Between them they cover everything the tables can say about two signs — which is why a star rating has to invent the difference between them.

Rat×Ox

子丑 · Water & Earth

Six-combination 六合

A six-combination — the classical “good match”, and one of only six pairings that appear on that list.

Dragon×Dragon

辰辰 · Earth & Earth

Self-punishment 自刑

Self-punishment. The same sign, and one of the four branches where the tables do not treat that as a bonus.

Monkey×Rat

申子 · Metal & Water

No relation

No direct relation. They share the Water trine, but a trine needs the Dragon as its third sign to form.

The same three tables, three different answers

Rat and Ox combine; Dragon and Dragon punish themselves; Rat and Monkey have no direct relation, though they share the Water trine and would need a Dragon to complete it. A one-to-five star chart would give the first a high score, the second another high score for being the same sign, and the third a middling one to be safe. The tables give a combination, a self-punishment, and nothing — which is more useful than three numbers invented to fill the same space.

Counted by the engine from the same fixed tables the tool consults, not entered by hand. The five relation counts add up to 29 rather than 25 because four pairings carry two relations each.

The full 12×12 table

Both axes are the twelve branches in order; the row is the first sign and the column the second. The matrix is symmetric — the tables have no direction — so every pairing appears twice. An empty cell means the tables list nothing for that pair, which is the answer for 53 of the 78 combinations.

Where two glyphs share a cell the pair carries both relations — 4 pairings do, among them Goat × Ox (clash and punishment), Tiger × Snake (harm and punishment), Tiger × Monkey (clash and punishment) and Snake × Monkey (combination and punishment). Keeping both is deliberate: the classical tables do not resolve the overlap, so neither do we.

The twelve signs

Each animal is a nickname for one branch. The element and polarity come from the branch, not from the animal — and the trine column lists the two signs that would complete the group.

Questions

Are Chinese zodiac signs compatible or not?
Two signs either have a named branch relation or they do not. The named ones are six-combination (六合), six-clash (六冲), six-harm (六害) and punishment (相刑), plus self-punishment (自刑) when the same sign meets itself. Across all 78 pairings only 25 have any relation at all: the rest are neither good nor bad, they are simply not addressed by the tables.
Why is there no compatibility score on this page?
Because a score would have to be invented. The classical system names five relations and lists which pairs fall into them; it does not rank every combination. Where popular charts give 144 ratings, they are translating those relations and then filling the gaps by judgement — we show the relation instead.
Which zodiac signs are most compatible?
The six combinations are the classical “good match” pairings: Rat with Ox, Tiger with Pig, Rabbit with Dog, Dragon with Rooster, Snake with Monkey, and Horse with Goat. That is a fixed list of six, not a ranking, and being on it says nothing about the two people involved — a chart is read as a whole.
Are people with the same zodiac sign compatible?
It depends on the sign. Dragon, Horse, Rooster and Pig are the four branches that punish themselves, so a same-sign pairing there is classed as 自刑 rather than as an ideal match. For the other eight signs, same-sign pairings carry no classical relation — which is neutral, not a bonus.
Is zodiac compatibility the same as BaZi compatibility?
No. Zodiac compatibility compares one character per person — the year branch. A BaZi compatibility reading compares two complete charts: sixteen stem pairs and sixteen branch pairs, the day masters, the five-element balance, and the spouse palace. The zodiac question is a much smaller question, which is why we also offer the full two-chart comparison.
Do I need my birth year for this?
Only the sign itself, which you almost certainly know. If you want the exact year branch — for instance if your birthday falls between 春节 and 立春, when the popular zodiac and the BaZi year pillar disagree — compute your chart instead, because that resolves the boundary to the exact minute.
